Industrial Revolution 4.0


Industries around the globe are in the throes of digital transformation, so-called Industrial Revolution 4.0, that is enabled by growing technologies such as Intelligent robots, smart sensors, autonomous drones, 3D printing, to name a few. Industries are introducing innovative services and digitizing their essential processes to enhance their product portfolio. Such transformation will enable industries to become digital enterprises with physical products at the core, augmented by digital interfaces and data-based, innovative services. We plan to carry out research and development work to address the challenges in embracing this digital transformation by industries such as reliability/stability in machine-to-machine communication, security issues and general reluctance. We also plan to facilitate the local industry in realizing the significance of industrial revolution and digital transformation. We are also working on the training of industry personnel to carry out data analytics and data-driven mathematical modeling employing the advanced signal processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence based methods.

Intelligent Transportation


Efficient and safe transportation is not only a per-requisite for economic development but also important to achieve the objectives of economic integration in the world economy. It encourages the development of both agriculture and industry and provides a lot of encouragement for the growth of the tertiary sector such as banking, insurance and trading. Lack of efficiency and safety results in congestion, delay in delivery time, fuel waste, pollution, accidents, bad quality of life and source of annoyance for general people. Advances in information and communication technologies have enabled the development of intelligent transportation applications and solutions aimed towards: 1) ensuring the safety of passengers in vehicles by developing intelligent active vehicle safety systems, collision avoidance systems and advanced driver assistance systems, 2) assisting the drivers about the surroundings of vehicle to avoid crashes due to multiple reasons e.g. high risk driving behaviors, low visibility due to extreme weather conditions etc. 3) managing the traffic flow in urban cities in order to decrease the congestion of traffic at some particular points which decreases the delay delivery time and makes the road journey more enjoyable etc. We are actively involved in different projects which directly deal with intelligent transportation sector and deal with all the issues listed above by developing smart and intelligent solutions.

Smart-Agriculture


Smart-agriculture, or precision farming as it is known in some circles, relies to using technology to improve efficiency of farming practices, all the while ensuring that the practices remain sustainable and environmentally friendly. At the heart of smart-agriculture is a network of wirelessly connected sensors that monitor a variety of parameters associated with the farm health. For instance, sensors could be used to monitor weather, animal health, soil fertility and salinity, erosions, pests, and a lot more.

Within this broad area, our aims include developing smart-agriculture systems that are specifically designed for the resource-strapped nature of Pakistan’s agricultural sector. Our expertise and interests include developing cheap sensors, building efficient wireless communication protocols, and developing effective data-analysis algorithms for helping farmers make timely decisions.

Pakistan faces enormous challenges in the health sector. From lack of infrastructure to lack of expertise, the problems are endless. Within this area, our objective is to try to solve some of these problems with the help of information and communication technologies. Towards this end, we attempt to explore how the ubiquitously present mobile devices (such as smart-phones) coupled with the increasing penetration of cellular coverage could be utilized to augment health access to rural areas of the country.

An increase an urbanization globally due to better quality of services and ease of access to these services in cities combined with increase in average human life span is posing a unique type of challenge to scientific community: to provide security, water, energy, housing, healthcare, and education to the growing masses by providing efficient, reliable and sustainable solutions to ease their way of living and improve quality of life. With the advent of low cost sensing and processing technologies and their ubiquitous presence in modern life, the goal of smart living is to provide instrumented, interconnected and intelligent solutions for safety, security, entertainment, convenience, energy management, health and wellness to the people in their daily life. We are currently focusing on different areas of smart living applications like smart sensing of environment for better security, non-invasive monitoring of human vital signs, mitigating the acoustic noise inside open and closed spaces etc.
